Mentoring

A helping hand when you need it most

Being mentored by an experienced practitioner is an excellent way for new graduates to quickly make the transition from the student world to the real world of business.

It will help you get valuable insight into your industry and career choice, developing your skills to quickly make your mark and gain a competitive edge in your career.

Mentoring can also be valuable at many stages in your career, possibly helping you decide:

  • how your career path should develop
  • how to prepare yourself for promotions, transfers, or career changes
  • how to evaluate opportunities and threats that may come your way individually or impact you as your company confronts these things

You may have been mentored at school or by parents and friends or by Tutors at College. But it is common to feel you have been cast adrift into an 'unknown world' when you accept your first real employment.

So having access to a friendly, experienced face who understands your concerns and needs and is available you for counsel and advice.

It is generally a very rewarding and career-enhancing activity.

How does Mentoring work?

Mentoring can occur in several different ways:

  • free (in exceptional circumstances)
  • free with a sponsored membership e.g. AMI
  • free with a paid membership
  • paid for by Mentee
  • paid for by employer

In all cases, as your Mentor, I need to meet you first (in person or virtually) to find out your hopes/dreams/aspirations/plans, your level of commitment and how well we suit each other (this is very important).

Then I would expect to agree a minimum of 4 1-hour sessions at 2 to 4 week intervals, supplemented by ad hoc contact if circumstances change quickly due to emerging opportunities or threats.

For your part, you may be required to do some specified preparation plus 'homework' between sessions.
