Your MBA is Just the Start: NOW is the time to get REAL!

This is an ideal opportunity for anyone who has recently completed a Masters’ degree, especially an MBA, to become really useful, really quickly. In fact your boss expects you to!

You see  I’ve been teaching at Universities and Business Colleges for over 10 years and I've concluded that we (the academic community in most parts of the world) aren’t doing a good enough job in preparing graduating students for ‘the real world’ of business. Typically, you graduate after 2/3 years of fairly intensive work which has comprehensive practical elements of course, but fundamentally there is still a big gap between structured course material and the actual business environment that students want to inhabit, contribute to and benefit from as soon as they can. 

Indeed, I would say that I have met only 1 MBA Graduate who, upon graduation,  really has achieved MASTERY of business administration, no matter what the certificate may say. Indeed, it can lead to rapid disillusionment and even failure in any enterprise they may try to grow or be a part of. 

The original intention of MBA degrees was that they be undertaken by people who have graduated with one or two degrees and have been working in an executive role for at least 5 years. This contrasts with other professions such as medicine, law and accountancy where it is mandated that a period of internship be served before being fully admitted to their chosen profession.  

      So, what to do about it? 

The course is offered to small groups of no more than 12 students in a workshop environment. 

It will be tailored as much as possible to your specific needs and expectations, indeed YOU may well help tailor it to suit. It can be especially useful for graduates working in developing economies, many of which provide incentives to budding entrepreneurs, and can be delivered locally. 

It is intensive (2 consecutive weekends, 8 hours per day plus reflection time).

So, after sharing these thoughts with other like-minded academics, I realised there is an opportunity (perhaps a loud outcry) to help such people (maybe YOU) be better prepared for your working lives. Hence was born this coaching program to bridge the gap between the often-theoretical world taught in Colleges and the real world. 

Heavily built around:

• actual up-to-date case studies, including businesses that participants are now working for or are considering 
• an intensive workshop environment with similarly-minded people to encourage co-learning
• a range of different teachers/workshop convenors/coaches/aides, including recent graduates themselves

:with potential add-ons for those interested in related topics such as personality profiling, corporate culture characteristics, AI use in practice, improving workplace characteristics, new business start-ups. 

On-going personal mentoring is included.

Topics covered include:

• review of key business principles – strategy, marketing, finance, operations, management
• understanding different types of businesses (there are at least 100 of them - apart from differences in foreign countries). Identifying YOURS. What are their Strengths and Weaknesses? What Opportunities and Threats affect them?
• review of ‘what’s going on in the world’ and how it may affect my business
• being clear about yourself – who am I? What do want from my job? Where do I want to be in 5 years
• corporate culture differences between similar companies
• performance expectations and measurement
• inter-personal skills – potential for personality profiling
• management hierarchies – understanding them, how to work with them effectively
• the value of Opportunism
